Open Sinus Lift

What is an Open Sinus Lift?

An open sinus lift is a surgical procedure designed to increase bone volume in the upper jaw, particularly in the posterior (molar) area.
It is performed when the bone height is too low for implant placement and the closed sinus lift technique cannot provide sufficient bone augmentation.

During the procedure, the dentist makes a small incision in the gum to access the sinus wall, gently lifts the sinus membrane, and fills the created space with bone graft material. The site is then sutured and left to heal, allowing new bone to form.

Who is it for?

An open sinus lift is recommended for patients who:

  • have significant bone loss in the upper jaw (less than 3–4 mm of bone height);
  • need dental implants in the molar or premolar region;
  • have healthy sinuses without inflammation or infection;
  • have no contraindications to surgical treatment.

This procedure helps restore sufficient bone volume for secure implant placement and future prosthetic restoration.
In most cases, implants are placed after the bone graft has integrated — usually within 4–8 months.

Benefits of the procedure

An open sinus lift makes it possible to place dental implants even in cases of severe bone deficiency.
When performed according to modern surgical protocols, the procedure is safe, predictable, and provides long-lasting, stable results.
