Soft Tissue Grafting Around Implants

Soft tissue grafting is a set of microsurgical procedures aimed at thickening the gum and/or increasing the width of the attached keratinized tissue around a dental implant.
A sufficient amount and quality of soft tissue help protect the implant, make oral hygiene easier, and reduce the risk of peri-implantitis and gum recession.

When it is recommended

  • Thin gingival biotype, narrow zone of keratinized gum (<2 mm), or discomfort during cleaning.
  • Gum recession, visible metal components, or lack of soft-tissue volume in the aesthetic zone.
  • Before prosthetic restoration on implants or during abutment/former placement to improve soft-tissue quality.

How the procedure is performed
The technique is selected individually depending on the patient’s situation. The main goal is to make the gum around the implant thicker, stronger, and more aesthetic.

  • Gum thickening using your own tissue. In most cases, the doctor takes a small piece of tissue from the palate and transplants it around the implant. This strengthens the gum, adds volume, and restores a natural contour.
  • Use of biomaterials. In some cases, special collagen membranes or matrices can be used instead of the patient’s own tissue. This reduces trauma and speeds up healing.
  • Minimally invasive microsurgical techniques. In visible smile zones, gentle approaches are used to preserve blood supply, minimize swelling, and make recovery more comfortable.

What we achieve

  • A thicker, more stable soft-tissue contour around the implant, reducing the risk of recession and inflammation.
  • A wider zone of keratinized gum for easier cleaning and healthier surrounding tissues.
  • Predictable aesthetic results — a clear gum line, natural papillae, and long-term stability of the implant restoration.
